Mott MacDonald to survey the role of taxis in rural areas

Engineering consultant Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the UK's Commission for Integrated Transport to examine the role of taxis in rural areas. The study will investigate successful taxi schemes implemented in rural environments across the UK and Europe with the aim of drawing out the key factors that have ensured the success of these schemes. The study is due for completion in mid 2008.

Mott MacDonald's team of transportation research experts will undertake an extensive literature review and a programme of telephone interviews with local authority officers and operators, after which a selection of case studies will be identified and explored. The findings will be compiled into individual reports, and disseminated through workshops and one-to-one interviews to enable key stakeholders to look at whether an enhanced role for taxis in rural areas in the UK would provide a cost effective solution to the transport needs of rural residents.
