World's largest non-welded hydraulic piping installation

When independent drilling contractor Stena Drilling commissioned Samsung Heavy Industries to build a series of the world's largest drill ships, GS-Hydro Norge was awarded the hydraulic piping on the first two. Recently, the piping contract for the third ship was landed as well. After taking care of the piping on drill ships Stena Drill Max I and II, GS Hydro Norge has been awarded the contract for hydraulic piping for the new Stena drill ship, Stena Drill Max III.

Samsung's strategy includes utilizing sub suppliers for all types of services. Norwegian Grenland Offshore was thus selected as engineering partner for the design of the support steel and interface between the drilling derrick and the vessel itself. It was discovered, however, that both availability and cost of the material, as well as installation of the selected 6" to 10" piping for the hydraulic- and nitrogene lines were challenging.

Due to these difficulties, GS-Hydro Norway was called in to discuss alternative solutions, the outcome being the selection of carbon piping with GS-Hydro Retain Ring technology for the Stena Drilling project. These systems are also used to a large extent by the supplier of the drilling package, National Oilwell.
