HDR speakers featured at streetcar workshops

Three HDR transit experts are being featured in a series of national workshops related to streetcars. The next workshops will be held in Denver on September 27 and Charlotte, N.C. on October 11.

Charlie Hales, senior vice president and transit planning principal and the former Portland city commissioner largely responsible for Portland's streetcar renaissance, will discuss successful economic and political strategies. David Taylor, senior vice president and national director for sustainable transportation solutions, and Dave Vozzolo, vice president and transit planning principal, will discuss local and federal funding options.

Prior to World War II, most North American cities were served by streetcars. After the war, the automobile culture gained primacy due to changes in housing policies, development of the Interstate Highway System and other factors. Today, streetcar systems are widely recognized for their ability to support and promote economic and community development in specific districts. By reducing the need for single-occupancy vehicles, they also play an essential role in sustainable transportation systems.

Some 50 cities are currently investigating such systems, and this heightened interest is reflected in HDR's assignments. HDR transit professionals are helping clients make informed decisions about streetcars and other transit investments in cities throughout the United States and Canada.
