DHV-led consortium investigates security of Dutch dikes

A consortium consisting of DHV, Tauw and Oranjewoud will chart the security of 24 of 58 dike rings in the Netherlands. The consortium, led by DHV, is responsible for five of the twelve sections of the "Flood Risks and Safety Project" (VNK-2) of the Dutch Directorate for Public Works and Water Management. The remaining seven sections are divided among three other combinations of consultancies and engineering groups. The DHV consortium is therefore the largest contractor in the VNK-2 project. The contracts estimated size is 2 million euro and its duration is 2 years.

A dike ring area is an area surrounded by a closed system of dikes or high grounds, which has to be protected against flooding caused by sea storm surges or high river water levels. The first Dutch Flood Risks and Safety Project (VNK) was initiated in 2001 at the request of the State Secretary of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. The purpose of the VNK project was to gain an understanding of the consequences and the probability of flooding in the Netherlands. Due to the public interest a follow up of VNK is started (VNK-2). The goal of VNK-2 is to describe the probability of flooding of dike rings, the vulnerable parts in these dike rings and the consequences of possible flooding.

The contract of the DHV, Tauw and Oranjewoud consortium includes all dike rings around the large rivers in the upper-river area (IJssel, Waal, Lek and Nederrijn), the border lakes and the dike rings in Zuid-Beveland and Walcheren.
