Michael Baker' manager receives FMA award

Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation, announced that Edward Thomas, Esq., technical manager, in Baker's Alexandria, Va., office has been presented with the Floodplain Management Association's (FMA) "Goddard Award for Outstanding Newsletter Contributions" for a series of articles on various legal challenges and opportunities in the fields of disaster relief and floodplain management for the FMA's quarterly publication.

Thomas has been with Baker since he retired in 2003 from federal service with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) after a distinguished 35-year career in disaster relief, floodplain management, homeland security and hazard mitigation. His passion is helping to relieve the misery caused by flood to individuals, the environment and to the taxpayer. The law is his chosen means of assisting partners in government, business and industry reduce the misery.

The Floodplain Management Association is a regional non-profit educational organization, which promotes the reduction of flood losses and encourages the protection and enhancement of floodplain management efforts in the western United States including California, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii. Last year, Thomas was awarded the Association of State Floodplain Managers' (ASFPM) "Goddard-White Award, " the nation's highest honor in floodplain management. This award is presented periodically to individuals who are highly instrumental in carrying forward the goals and objectives of floodplain management throughout the nation.
