Multiplex's Vale community wins 'Environmental Excellence' award

Multiplex's Vale community located in Perth's Swan Valley has received the prestigious 'Environmental Excellence' award at the recent 2007 Urban Development Institute of Australia (WA) Awards for Excellence.

The ground-breaking project, situated across 537 hectares, will be home to 15,000 residents upon completion in 2014 and will incorporate 5,000 homes, shopping centres, schools, retirement villages and extensive parkland and conservation areas.

Vale's commitment to environmental sustainability is highlighted by the fact nearly a quarter of the project's total area has been set aside for conservation and public open space, which is unprecedented in Greenfield developments in WA.

Important sustainability initiatives include a tree harvesting program, establishing a Multiplex-Murdoch University Sustainability Research and Development Fund and also working closely with the Western Australian Planning Commission to ensure Vale's unique landscape is adequately managed.

Significant community initiatives that have already commenced at Vale include Smart Gardening and Smart Home and Living workshops and community art projects focusing on sustainability. Future initiatives will include a heritage, culture and environmental interpretive trail and a community and wetland interpretive centre.
