DuPont Photovoltaic Solutions at EU Solar Energy Conference

DuPont Photovoltaic Solutions (DPVS) exhibited a broad and growing portfolio of films, resins for encapsulants, encapsulant films, conductive pastes and more, at the 22nd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition – the world's largest PV event in Milan, Italy, September 3-7, 2007. DPVS is highlighting its latest technologies for both crystalline and thin film solar module systems, designed to increase the lifetime of solar modules, and improve productivity of PV module makers.

Additions to the DPVS portfolio include DuPont Bynel resins and DuPont Surlyn ionomer resins, both solventless adhesive solutions to ensure adequate bonding for non crystaline silicon technologies, and DuPont Kapton polyimide film for flexible substrates that provide excellent electrical and thermal properties to thin film modules.

Significant enhancements to existing products within the DPVS portfolio include:

• Next Generation DuPont Tedlar PV2100 polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) films, for enhanced backsheet dimensional stability, and superior reflectance for improved output and efficiency. TPT backsheets made with DuPont Tedlar PV2100 series films are less prone to wrinkling during vacuum lamination. Solar modules made with Tedlar can also provide greater power output because the backsheet promotes higher internal reflectance.

• New DuPont Solamet screen printable thick film metallization materials that enable solar cell manufacturers to significantly reduce their cost per watt by achieving higher cell efficiencies, increased production yields and lower material consumption.

• DuPont Teflon FEP fluoropolymer film, which delivers more power output, and higher transmittance over an extended period of time, improving long-term cost efficiency.

Key examples of successful recent applications of DuPont materials include the Building Research Establishment Innovation Park in London, England, and "Living Tomorrow, The House of the Future, " located near Brussels, Belgium. Both projects are sponsored by DuPont and intended to promote a greater understanding of PV power.

DuPont and the solar industry estimate that the global PV market is growing at more than 30 percent per year. Within the European Union, the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) estimates that by 2010, under favorable policy conditions, three giga watts (GW) of power could be installed annually, which is more than triple that in 2006. To meet the needs of the fast-growing photovoltaic solar energy market, DuPont last year announced that it has invested $50 million to expand production of DuPont Tedlar polyvinyl fluoride film (PVF) at its Fayetteville, N.C., facility, which is on track to begin resin production in late 2007. Finished films are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2008. Coupled with additional expansions for other DuPont photovoltaic materials, DuPont's total planned investment is more than $100 million.
