Peri formwork solution in Dresden, Germany

The Albertinum, a historical public museum and archive in the centre of Dresden is currently having a two-storey, spacious roof installed over the inner courtyard. This will eventually feature workshops and a central depository for valuable works of art. At the same time, the construction – designed by Berlin-based architect, Volker Staab, and described as an "elevated Noah´s Ark" – manages to create a generously-sized facility which can be used as an entrance area, bookshop, café as well as additional exhibition space.

The altogether 2,700 ton steel composite structure is supported on separate reinforced concrete columns like a bridge, with a span of almost 70 metres on the front side. In the process, two enormous, nine metre high steel lattice girders have been completely integrated into the building. For the assembly of the steel construction and for subsequent concreting of the reinforced concrete slabs, the Weissenhorn-based Peri engineers, together with the other companies involved in the construction work, designed a customized formwork and scaffolding solution based on very specific project requirements.

For the various assembly phases, a 16.50 metre high working and support level could be erected using the Peri modular scaffold system which means all task assignments can be carried out very cost-effectively. The modular structure of the Peri system allows optimal adjustment of the scaffold sub-structure to be made on the existing building and to the planned roof geometry as well as the defined bearing points and surfaces. Thus 14 partially-bundled standards with short ledgers ensure safe load transfers of 450 kN respectively, even at large heights. Bridging with regular nine-metre spacings create sufficient open areas below the working platform and altogether form a horizontal bracing frame with a height of 16 metres. Pressure supports transfer loads into the existing building structure which means time-consuming anchor installation is not required. The actual platform is formed with load-bearing Peri formwork girders as main and cross beams so that large spans with resulting generously-spaced sub-structure grid arrangement can be achieved.

The SBG site team completely pre-assembled several crane-movable Peri scaffolding units on the ground. These could then be extended at the required positions without any problems using short consecutive crane lifts. This naturally saved assembly time and ensured extremely cost-effective use of the crane. In addition, working on the ground meant a substantial increase in safety when compared to the individual assembly operations at higher positions. In this way the tight schedule could be maintained in spite of the cramped conditions and the first steel girders could already be positioned and installed shortly after erection work began. The working and assembly platform subsequently functioned also as an intermediate level for forming the lower slab. In the process, concreting loads are carried via slab formwork and individual props into the Peri load-bearing system and safely transferred into the ground.
