Stone+tec presents Peter Parler Award for best craftsmen

What the stonemasonry craft does for heritage preservation is shown by the results of the competition for the Peter Parler Award 2007. The jury judged two of the 35 works as worthy of the award. The restoration and preservation of the tracery window of the chancel polygon of the Franciscan monastery in Zeitz by stonemason and sculptor Christian Späte and the production of new arch reliefs for the Stadtgottesacker cemetery in Halle a. d. Saale by sculptor Marcus Golter should be regarded as exemplary.

The award is worth 15,000 euros and is donated by the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz, which in cooperation with the Bundesinnungsverband des Deutschen Steinmetz-, Stein- und Holzbildhauerhandwerks organized the award presented every two years at Stone+tec in Nuremberg. The presentation takes place at Stone+tec 2007 on Thursday, 7 June. Christian Späte and Marcus Golter each receive 7,500 euros.

A special award was presented for the first time for the work of cathedral and minster stonemasons' lodges. This goes to the Schwäbisch Gmünd minster stonemasons' lodge for the restoration and preservation of the west facade of the Holy Cross Minster in Schwäbisch Gmünd. Manfred Kühn, master of the minster stonemasons' lodge, is awarded a sculpture created by Felix Burgel and donated by Ebner Verlag.

Peter Parler was the chief master of the Parlers, a widely dispersed family of architects and sculptors in the 14th century. The name "Parler" goes back to the original job name "Parlier" (German for deputy lodge master), now called a "Polier" (German for head mason). The competition was intentionally named after a master with European-wide influence.
