Ramboll as consultants on air traffic structures in the Barents region

New airline service between Murmansk and destinations in the North will strengthen the link between the countries in the Barents region. As consultants, Ramboll Denmark sets the scene for cooperation between authorities, airline companies, hotels and travel agencies in the region. Today, the Russian market is considered among the fastest growing markets in the region, and especially trade between Murmansk and the Nordic countries is now flourishing. This development has created a need for regular and less time-consuming airline service in the region. Therefore, the two new routes between the Russian city of Murmansk and Tromsø and Kirkenes in Norway are welcomed. Furthermore, the existing route between Luleå and Murmansk is under rerouting creating a new connection to a destination in Northern Finland as well.

The project includes establishment of a common conference in Murmansk as well as the creation of a marketing strategy promoting the new airlines. The project is financed by the EU, under the Sustainable Transport in the Barents Region programme (STBR).

Several political and operational challenges are likely to arise, when operating aviation in the Barents region. This is not least due to the huge differences between European and Russian legislation and administrative procedures. Another challenge is that potential passengers have a very sparse knowledge about the new airlines and the many opportunities, which now arise from these.

Murmansk is the largest city north of the polar circle – a status achieved due to its ice-free harbour, which is the only one in the area with free access to the Atlantic. The city is situated in a tough area where people traditionally lived of oil and gas industry and mining. The long distances and tough geographic conditions for ground bound traffic means that air traffic is a crucial mean of transportation in the region. But traditionally transportation between the countries have been carried out by either car or bus, due to factors such as low population density as well as a relatively limited activity level within industry, economy and trade making it difficult to run an aviation company in the area.
