Acciona and EREN to build a biomass plant in Spain

Acciona Energy and Ente Regional de la Energía de Castilla y León (EREN) will build a 15 MW capacity biomass plant in the locality of Briviesca (Burgos province, northern Spain). The plant, the first biomass facility in the region of Castilla y León exclusively dedicated to the production of electricity from agricultural waste, will burn around 100,000 tonnes of straw a year and be operational in October 2009. Acciona will have a majority stake in the capital of the project development company. As well as EREN, it is expected that other regional partners will also be involved.

The Briviesca plant will mean an investment of around 40 million euros. Construction work is expected to begin in October this year and the entry into service of the plant is planned for the second half of 2009. It will produce 120 million kilowatt-hours, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 50, 000 homes in Castilla y León.

The biomass plant at Briviesca will be the first in the region of Castilla y León exclusively dedicated to the production of electricity from agricultural waste products such as straw.

Acciona Energy has commercially operated a 25 MW capacity straw-fired biomass plant located near the town of Sangüesa (Navarre, northern Spain) for several years. The facility is a benchmark of its type in the south of Europe. The company previously set up the logistics for the supply of fuel to the plant; this is an essential element in guaranteeing its operational capability and profitability. Last year the Sangüesa plant produced 204 million kilowatt-hours of electric power.
