U.S. housing starts increase 9 percent in February

The U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development reported that privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in February 2007 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.532 million. This is 2.5% below the revised January rate of 1.571 million and is 28.6% below the February 2006 estimate of 2.147 million. Single-family authorizations in February were at a rate of 1.089 million; this is 3.1% below the January figure of 1.124 million.

Privately-owned housing starts increased 9% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.525 million in February from a revised 10-year low of 1.399 million in January, but is 28.5 % below the February 2006 rate of 2.132 million. Single-family housing starts increased 10.3% in February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.22 million.

Privately-owned housing completions in February were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.66 million. This is 9.4% below the revised January estimate of 1.836 million and is 18.4% below the February 2006 rate of 2.038 million.
