Black & Veatch provides services for Westar's Emporia Energy Center

Westar Energy, the largest electric utility in Kansas, has selected the Overland Park-based engineering giant Black & Veatch to provide engineering, procurement and construction services through Overland Contracting Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Black & Veatch, for the construction of a 600-megawatt power project to meet growing customer electricity demand in Kansas.

Black & Veatch will provide EPC services for Westar's Emporia Energy Center being constructed six miles northeast of Emporia, Kan. The 600-megawatt natural gas-fired peaking plant will help meet the increasing electric demand of Westar's 669,000 customers in Kansas.

The Emporia Energy Center will have an initial capacity of 300 megawatts, which is scheduled to be operational in May 2008. A second 300-megawatt addition will then be installed and begin operation in May 2009. Groundbreaking for the energy center is planned for March 12, 2007.
