Prever award for the Adriatic LNG terminal project in Algeciras

Spain's General Council for Industrial Relations and Labour Sciences and the Rioja Regional Government Department of Employment and Labour Relations have granted Acciona the Prever (National Safety Award) for its work in the north of Algeciras Bay to build a concrete platform for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal.

The award recognises Acciona's commitment and efforts to include safety management in all its actions and its development of excellent safety and workplace risk prevention practices for this project, enabling it to complete the job successfully. The award will be presented by the Chairman of the Council in Logroņo on 24 February during the 8th Technical Seminar on Workplace Safety.

The construction work, which commenced in mid-2005 at the Campamento (San Roque) site, consists mainly of: building a concrete platform comprising a structure 180 metres long, 88 metres wide and 47 metres high; installation of liquefied natural gas tanks; installation, connection and mechanical completion of the platform machinery and equipment.

The construction of the concrete platform, on which around 650 people are currently working, offers a range of benefits to the local area such as the participation in the project by local companies, the opportunity to increase the international reputation of Algeciras Bay, and the creation of direct and indirect employment.

After the caisson is completed, it will be transported by sea to its final location in the Adriatic Sea, off the Italian coast. Once installed, the plant will receive LNG carried by gas tanker ships from Qatar and other sources, regasify the product and supply the gas to the Italian gas grid via a pipeline. The terminal will have a regasification capacity of 8 billion cubic metres of LNG per year.

The main contractor for the ITL terminal is Aker Kvaerner, and the project's majority shareholders are Exxon, Qatar Petroleum and Edison. Construction of the concrete platform is expected to be complete in mid-2007 and it will be shipped to the Adriatic in 2008.
