Mott MacDonald helps deliver new terminal for Izmir's airport

Mott MacDonald's aviation team joined in the celebrations on 9 September to mark the official opening of the new international terminal at Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport in Turkey in the presence of the Turkish Prime Minister, Mr Erdoğan. Mott MacDonald was technical advisor for the project working with TAV Airports Group, Turkey's leading airport development, manage-ment and operating group, and lender West LB AG, from prior to financial close through to completion of the airport construction.

The concession to build and operate the terminal was let by the Directorate General of State Airports Authority in 2005 to TAV Airports Group, a Turkish company which also operates Istanbul Atatürk Airport, Ankara Esenboga Airport's domestic and inter-national terminals (to be opened in October) and Tblisi International Airport in the Georgian Republic.

The construction contract was signed in June 2005 and construct-ion work commenced in late July 2005. Because of the way con-cessions are let in Turkey and in order to maximise the operat-ional period of the concession, the construction programme was very tight and the terminal was handed over to TAV Operations on 13 September 2006 after reaching provisional acceptance.

Chris Chalk a director of Mott MacDonald's aviation team which provided advice on technical, traffic forecast, operational, costs, revenue and environmental issues said: "Turkey is currently expanding a number of its international airports using private finance to create world class facilities and we're providing tech-nical support on three of them. This latest project which was completed in just over 13 months was, in our experience, realised in one of the shortest construction times ever considering its size and complexity."
