Astaldi-Ghella-Impregilo: Venezuela Railway Contracts

The grouping of Italian companies formed by Astaldi, Ghella and Impregilo and the IAFE, the autonomous state railway entity of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, have signed the two contracts, together worth 2.2 billion dollars, for the construction of the San Juan de los Morros-San Fernando de Apure railway (252 km) and the Chaguaramas-Cabruta railway (201 km).

Work is expected to begin in the next few months, and will take 76 months. The projects involve construction of 453 km of new track, including 15 km of tunnels and 12 km of bridges and viaducts, as well as design and installation of trackworks, 13 railway stations, 3 interports and a maintenance shop. The contracts also include options worth a total of one billion dollars for the engineering, supply and installation of the railway system (signals, controls, telecommunications, electrification, rolling stock), to be regulated by an additional agreement.

The IAFE, the contract awarder, has also exercised a 1.5 billion dollar option for the engineering and construction of new stations, interports and an additional section of track on the Puerto Cabello-La Encrucijada railway line project, on which work by the Italian grouping is already well ahead.
