The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena is 25-Year Award Recipient

The American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC) announced the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., designed by architect Craig Ellwood, of Craig Ellwood Associates, as the 25-Year Award recipient for 2005. The 25-Year Award recognizes long-term commitment to architectural excellence and substantial contribution to the community.

The Art Center College of Design, an unadorned steel structure spanning a canyon in the hills above the Rose Bowl, raised some local concerns when it was constructed in the `70s. Today it is home to more than 1, 400 students and has become a Pasadena landmark.

The stark, 21, 000-square-foot steel and glass structure sits on 175 acres and contains the entire college campus. Designed with only one suspended ceiling in the Bridge Wing of the building, the structural, electrical and mechanical systems are left exposed, drawing attention to the intrinsic nature of the building's construction. The College's website explains that the design "perfectly mirrors the Art Center's modernist aesthetic."

Craig Ellwood, founder of Craig Ellwood & Associates, was a pioneer in designs incorporating steel. The Art Center College of Design is an excellent example of his work.
